Waves Inside Tracks January 2010
SSL 4000 Collection
left

The The SSL 4000 Collection was the first foray Waves made into the world of vintage gear modeling, and one that certainly made waves in the professional audio industry. Developed under license from Solid State Logic, the plug-in bundle includes precise models of the SSL G-Series master buss compressor, channel strip, and equalizer, as well as the E-Series channtel srip. If you haven’t yet tried the Waves models, then demo this collection now, and find out why it’s one of the industry’s most popular plug-in bundles.

What is Modeling?

Modeling

Waves engineers developed a proprietary technique to precisely model the characteristics of analog hardware gear. This includes every nuance of the hardware behavior, including the specific EQ curves, time constants, analog harmonic distortion characteristics, and more. There was no better console to kick off Waves’ modeling adventure than the SSL 4000 – the punchy, crispy, identifiable, high-end console sound heard on countless records over the past thirty years. In fact, when Waves released the SSL 4000 Collection, it was such a tectonic shift for in-the-box mixing that Digidesign decided to see if engineers could even distinguish between a mix done on a hardware SSL 4000 console and one done entirely in-the-box using the Waves SSL plug-ins. The results left everyone massively impressed, realizing this was the beginning of a new era. You can take Digidesign’s listening test here.

The SSL 4000 Collection comes with built-in presets from one of the world’s top mixers and an avid SSL user: Chris Lord-Alge. Just put the SSL E-Channel on each of your multi-tracked drum tracks, select one of his presets for each drum, and hear for yourself how quickly your drums (if recorded well, of course) have that Chris Lord-Alge hard hitting pop/rock sound. The same goes for Bass, Vocals, Guitars, Piano, Strings, and Brass.

With the acclaimed sound, recognizable look, and character of the familiar SSL consoles in four convenient plug-ins (G-Channel, G-EQ, G-Master Buss Compressor & E-Channel), the SSL 4000 Collection is a must-have.
